When Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks performed a stunning duet of Shallow, the hit song made popular by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the film A Star Is Born, they astounded fans.
In 2019, while performing her “Meaning of Life” show in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Kelly Clarkson stunned the audience with a stunning rendition of the 2018 Grammy and Golden Globe-winning song “Shallow,” which was first performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the popular movie A Star is Born.
Clarkson, 42, praised Gaga, who co-wrote the song for the love film in which she costarred with Cooper, saying, “This chick is amazing.”
“This song is amazing. The song is called “Shallow,” and I thought she and Bradley Cooper did a fantastic job with it. Since I obviously don’t have a Bradley Cooper here, we’re performing our own version of it.
According to People, Clarkson went on, “I hope I don’t suck, and if I do, I hope she doesn’t see it.”
Millions of admirers watched her cover and complimented her “effortless vocals.”
As if she wrote it herself, she sings it! One fan comments, “Beautiful,” on Clarkson’s YouTube video.
I still get chills from this cover. A second person remarks, “It’s just the best,” and a third person jokes, “Is there a Grammy category for covers? Kelly, you did an excellent job.
A jam session
Then, a few years later, legendary country music performer Garth Brooks joined host Kelly Clarkson for a jam session.
But first, the “Dive Bar” singer told Clarkson about his 2020 duet – “Shallow” – that he performed with his wife Trisha Yearwood.
“I witnessed you all doing this [on Facebook] in real time. You were engaged in a live activity. Was that the beginning of it all? The American Idol star asks her guest, noting that the song is a highlight of Brooks’ album, “Fun.”
Brooks, who turned 63 on February 7, explains that “somebody requested that him and his wife sing the duet on his Facebook Live show.
“Miss Yearwood knew what she was doing, so I was like, ‘Oh, crap.’ I’d seen the movie – it’s pretty cool,” Brooks said, strumming bars from the song on his guitar.
“You’re invited in.”I adore it,” Clarkson exclaims.
“Amazing”
And then the country legend urges her to sing along. “I would love to hear you sing,” he said.
“I would love to sing it with you. Sorry Trisha,” she joked. “You’re not here and if you were here, I’d sing three-part.”
After the stunning performance, the singer locked eyes with the camera and addressing his wife, he said: “Miss Yearwood I didn’t enjoy that,” before turning away and commenting, “That was fabulous!”
‘Musical chemistry’
The performance was intimate yet powerful. With Clarkson’s soaring vocals and Brooks’ signature storytelling tone, the two created a version of ‘Shallow’ that felt both raw and authentic. The contrast between Clarkson’s contemporary pop style and Brooks’ deep, vintage country sound created for a beautiful blend that resonated powerfully with listeners across genres.
“Kelly doesn’t just sing a song, she makes you [feel] it and understand it,” writes one fan in the comments section of the YouTube video.
“The musical chemistry between Kelly and Garth is off-the-charts and I desperately want a real duet single from them,” writes a second.
“I can sit here and just listen to them sing all day. They are both so talented and have great personalities. “Watching this was so much fun!” says a third.
Another comment about the spooky performance reads, “I got chills when Garth started.” Kelly sounds amazing and came on strong. Fantastic duo on a fantastic song. Many thanks to you both.
