Canada and Mexico have taken action in response to the imposition of massive tariffs by President Donald Trump. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has issued a warning that the acts of the President will have “real consequences for the American people.”
It has been almost two weeks since President Trump returned to the White House, and in that short amount of time, he has made a great deal of changes to the way the United States of America is managed.
The number of executive orders that President Trump issued on his first day in office was unprecedented, and some of the first things he did were to make changes to immigration and passport policies.
Higher tariffs on imports have also been imposed by the Trump administration on countries such as China, Canada, and Mexico. The tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada are at a rate of 25 percent, while the taxes on goods coming from China are at a rate of 10 percent.
Officials from Canada, Mexico, and China have obviously not taken well to the new modifications, as you can probably expect.
“We’re ready with a response, a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a statement that was made shortly before the details of the increased tariffs were revealed on Saturday (February 1).
In addition, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated the following during a press briefing that took place on Friday (January 31): “We have Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C according to what the government of the United States decides.”
“It is very important for the people of Mexico to know that we will always defend the dignity of our people, that we will always defend respect for our sovereignty, and engage in dialogue as equals, as we have always stated, without subordination.”
As a direct in response to the executive order issued by Trump, the presidents of Canada and Mexico both announced the imposition of counter-tariffs on Saturday evening.
Tariffs of 25 percent are being imposed by Canada on commodities worth $155 billion from the United States.
Trudeau concluded by saying: “It will have real consequences for you, the American people.”
When asked about the activities done by the White House, the Prime Minister of Canada stated, “The actions taken by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together.”
While this was going on, Sheinbaum disclosed in a message on Twitter that she had given orders to her economic minister to take actions that would safeguard Mexico’s interest.
“We categorically reject the White House’s slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organisations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,” the Mexican president stated in his letter.
“If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious fentanyl consumption in their country, they could fight the sale of drugs on the streets of their major cities, which they don’t do, and the laundering of money that this illegal activity generates that has done so much harm to its population.”
