Are you sick of having to go to the store each time your batteries run out? I concur. Until I came onto a hack one day that revolutionised my use of remote controls. What’s the best part? It’s easy, inexpensive, and a lot of fun to do yourself.
The battery dilemma is a small issue with a substantial financial impact.
You’re seated on the couch, ready to start your favourite movie, and you know how it feels. and your remote control is unresponsive. The batteries are dead again. Without our understanding, the small batteries used for the TV, fan, and children’s toys build up to a significant amount.
Why not replace the batteries permanently rather than purchasing new ones?
A do-it-yourself rechargeable remote control method
The solution is surprisingly easy. You’ll need the following in order to convert your standard remote control into a rechargeable device:
A little lithium-based rechargeable battery with a 3.7V capacity, like a 14500 or similar
A TP4056 USB charging module, which is readily available in internet marketplaces
A diode, such as a 1N4007, to change the voltage when necessary.
All it takes is a little patience!
The conventional batteries will be taken out and replaced with soldered battery cables. Like a smartphone, your remote control can be recharged by adding a tiny micro-USB or USB-C port to the casing (for instance, on the back). Isn’t it convenient?
The Bluetooth version, for those who are interested.
Do you want to go farther? Even converting a remote control into a Bluetooth-enabled gadget is possible. This approach requires a little more expertise because it requires you to completely reprogramme the circuit and integrate a microcontroller (such an ESP32).
For people who like DIY projects and electronics, there is another adventure that is appropriate. However, the first method is adequate if you merely wish to do away with the requirement for batteries.
A tiny gesture for you, a significant step for the environment
Every year, hundreds of millions of batteries are thrown away in France. They still require a great deal of energy to produce, even if they are partially recycled. Even for a basic daily object, selecting a rechargeable remote control is a concrete step towards living a more responsible life.
And, let’s face it, using something you’ve made yourself gives you a real sense of accomplishment. It’s bringing a quiet flatmate back to life.
