How a single woman transformed a bothersome issue into a… lucrative fix
A small elderly woman was seen walking slowly down the sidewalk one sunny afternoon while pulling two big, shabby plastic trash bags in tow. Occasionally, a surprise—a crisp $20 dollar fluttering to the pavement—would slip from one of the bags, which were slightly ripped, with every soft stride.
A curious policeman came up to her after observing this strange scene.
He said, “Pardon me, ma’am.” “Twenty dollars are spilling out of that bag.”
The woman looked back, startled. “Oh, really? Oh no! I should go back and try to locate them. I appreciate you telling me, officer.
The officer wasn’t finished, though.
“Now wait a minute,” he remarked, glancing at the swollen bags. “Where was the source of all that money? It wasn’t stolen, was it?
“Oh, heavens no!” she said in a kind but stern voice. “You see, the football stadium parking lot is directly next to my backyard. Crowds of boisterous fans congregate on game days, and well, many of them defecate directly into my flower garden via a knothole in my fence!
She shook her head and moaned.
It initially infuriated me. You know, it ruined my daisies. Then I thought of something. When you can get even—creatively—why get angry?
She leaned closer and smiled mischievously.
I now use my garden shears to wait silently at the fence on game days. “Okay buddy, $20 or it’s coming off!” is what I say when someone, uh, introduces themself through the knot hole.
After blinking, the officer erupted in laughter. “All right… I guess that’s one way to enforce your property line!”
“Just right!” she laughed.
“Hey, what’s in the other bag?” the officer called back as he turned to go, still laughing.
“Well… not everyone pays,” she added, smiling wryly at him.
