When we are confronted with a person who requires assistance, we have two choices. The two options are to either help or to murmur something incomprehensible under our breath and then walk away. All things considered, it appears that this is the case.
Naturally, we have a propensity to assist those who are most familiar to us, such as members of our family and close friends. However, when we come across strangers, and homeless people in particular, we are typically considerably less willing to comply with their requests.
Perhaps we are afraid, perhaps we believe that someone else will assist them instead, perhaps we do not believe that they are in need of assistance, or perhaps we believe that they will use any charity that we provide them with to purchase drugs or alcohol. But regardless of the reason, people who are homeless are among the most vulnerable members of our society, and they very surely might benefit from assistance on a regular basis.
It would appear that employees at Burger King, specifically a young man by the name of Matthew Resendez, had a very good understanding of this.
Matthew was working one evening in 2018, when he was confronted by a homeless man who entered the building. While it was not out of the ordinary for Matthew to provide service to homeless guys at the restaurant, this specific individual had a question that was out of the ordinary for him.
Just as he reached the counter, the scruffy man said in a straightforward manner, “What can I get for fifty cents?”
As soon as Matthew heard his question, he was presented with two choices. “Nothing” is the response that should be given to the underlying reality, which is that fifty cents would not have been enough to purchase even the smallest appetizer on the menu. On the other hand, Matthew did not choose to supply that response.
A Generosity Act is an Act
The most hearty dinner on the menu was ordered by Matthew, who paid for it out of his own pocket because he was so generous.
The narrative might have come to an end there. However, a patron of the restaurant happened to see Matthew’s small act of kindness, and as a result, they started paying it forward… as well as leaving him a hundred dollar tip!
After learning about the events that transpired on that particular day, Mathew’s mother, Michelle Resendez, felt a genuine sense of pride for her son. After some time had passed, she went on Facebook to share the experience.
“A moment of pride for the mother! After Matthew had finished his shift for the day, a homeless man approached the restaurant with fifty cents in his pocket and inquired about the availability of any items on the menu that he could purchase. Matthew asked him what he would order if he had the ability to do so, and the guy responded that anything would alleviate the sufferings of his hunger. The man ordered a hefty dinner from Matthew, who then used his own debit card to pay for the food. Matthew then rung up the man for the meal.
It was then that he offered him the receipt and instructed him to take a seat and relax. It is possible that the story stops there, and it would be a beautiful ending; but, it appears that a woman watched my son while he was performing his random act of kindness. Not only did she write a letter to the employer to inform them about the supportive employee they had working for them, but she also gave my son with a very big tip. I am so happy to be his mother, and I can give myself a pat on the back knowing that I have contributed to the development of this young guy with a great heart by being his mother.
It is probable that if it were a different member of the staff, they would advise the homeless gentlemen to leave the restaurant without a single item to eat; however, Matthew is not considered to be one of those individuals. He is a very remarkable young man who has the desire to change the way that people who are homeless and destitute are cared for, and he was rewarded for his efforts in this regard.
