In the two days leading up to my wedding, my fiance Robert informed me of a shocking revelation: he had to go for an unexpected trip. Something didn’t feel quite right, and when he received a call from his supervisor that didn’t make sense, I trailed him. Due to the fact that what I discovered was not what I had anticipated, I found myself having doubts about trust, love, and the man I was going to marry.
I couldn’t help but have a rising concern that I might never get married when I hit thirty. I couldn’t help but feel this way. It was a source of concern that love had eluded me. But here I was, facing the prospect of becoming a wife in only two days.
Almost as if it were a dream. The man who had won my heart and shown me what love could truly be was about to begin a new chapter in my life with Robert, the man who had stolen my heart. Robert was everything I could have ever hoped for: he was intelligent, endearing, and incredibly gentle.
Even when I was in a bad mood, he had the ability to make me laugh with his wacky jokes or his friendly smile. It made me feel whole.
Nevertheless, that happiness began to wane the moment Robert entered the bedroom area. Seeing his worried expression halted me in my tracks. The situation was not right.
“What’s the matter?” I inquired as soon as I became aware of the disturbed expression on his face.
After a moment of hesitation, Robert rubbed the nape of his neck. Please accept my sincere apologies, Katherine, but I have to leave for a business trip.
“What is it?” I remarked, my brow furrowing in concentration. “However, our wedding is scheduled to take place in two days.”
“I am aware,” he stated with a low tone of voice. “You have my word that I will promptly return. Perhaps even the evening before the wedding takes place.”
“Are you serious at this very moment? At this point in time, you are going to abandon me by myself? The sharpness of my voice was not what I had planned, but I was unable to control it.
After heaving a sigh, Robert moved further in. “I wouldn’t go if it wasn’t anything of significance. Considering that everything has previously been prepared, there should be no problems. I’m sorry that things are going to turn out this way, but I really need to leave.”
“But why not?” With a sense of the rising temperature in my face, I inquired. In my attempt to keep my feelings in check, I was unable to find the right words.
When Robert grabbed me, he hugged me strongly and held me in his arms. Even though I despise having to do this to you, we still have our entire lives ahead of us. Whenever you need me, I will be there for you, Katherine.
“Who will be accompanying you?” I inquired, my tone becoming more subdued.
“It’s Travis. This is the reason why it is important,” he explained. I was aware that Travis was his supervisor, and I comprehended the situation. In spite of this, I had the need to scream like a child. As a result, I ingested it. As a matter of fact, I was an adult.
I responded with “Fine” after a lengthy delay. Nevertheless, give some thought to the ways in which you are going to make amends to me while you are away.
My forehead was lightly touched by Robert’s lips as he let out a quiet chuckle. “All right,” he responded. After that, he turned around and started packing.
With lightning speed, Robert folded his clothing and stuffed them into his suitcase. I remained seated on the bed, calmly observing him in the hopes that he would reconsider his decision. Every item that he packed seemed to bring me one step further away from him.
When I looked over, I noticed that his travel tickets were sitting on the edge of the bed. The location of the destination drew my attention.
As far as I could tell, his company did not operate in that city. With the intention of persuading myself that it was reasonable, I thought that perhaps they were expanding.
After he had finished, I led him to the entrance of the room. After giving me a bear hug and a kiss good-bye, he departed abruptly. After a few minutes, my phone began to buzz.
The mere sight of Travis’s name caused my heart to race. What prompted him to call? Did Robert experience any kind of misfortune?
What’s up? “Is everything going to be okay?” As I clenched the phone tightly in my hand, I inquired with a shaking voice.
In a composed tone, Travis stated, “Everything is fine.” I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to attend your wedding. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Due to a work trip, I will be absent from the city. Even so, I would still like to send a present to both you and Robert. In what way can I deliver it to you?
My stomach became more constricted. “Wait, Robert will be back by the wedding, right?” With a knot of confusion in my stomach, I inquired.
In a tone that suggested he was perplexed, Travis answered, “Katherine, I’m not sure what you mean.” In the days leading up to Robert’s wedding, I would never consider sending him on a trip. Did he say that I was the one who did it?
I was at a loss for words and unable to come up with an answer. Not at all. “I must have misunderstood,” I remarked in a hurry about it. “I’ll let you know about the gift.”
Travis responded, “Okay,” in a tone that was hesitant. “Let me know if you need anything.” After then, he hung up the phone.
I quickly grabbed my coat, my wallet, and my bag, and then I left everything else behind. I did this without any hesitation. As I was driving to the airport, my thoughts were racing.
I had been deceived by Robert. I had no idea why, but I needed answers to my questions. The unpredictability was almost intolerable.
In the process of purchasing a ticket for his flight, my hands were shaking. To our good fortune, there were still seats reserved for us.
I got the impression that everyone was looking at me as I struggled to remove my shoes and jacket when I was at the security checkpoint.
After I had finished, I finished by putting on eyeglasses and tucking my hair into a hood. I took a quick look around the waiting room, and then I noticed him.
Robert sat down close to the entrance, his head bowed, and his eyes fixed on his phone. I positioned myself in such a way that I would remain inconspicuous while still being near enough to easily follow.
He was the first passenger to board the aircraft when it was summoned. I followed him onboard the plane while maintaining a safe distance from him. My heart was pounding.
In spite of the fact that I couldn’t believe I was doing this, I had to find out the truth. The flight seemed to go on forever. Every time Robert moved around in his seat, I couldn’t help but wonder what he was contemplating.
I was able to locate him once more once we had arrived, and I followed him outdoors. In the same way that he did, I called for a taxi.
I told my driver, “Follow that car, but keep your distance,” and he gave me a confused expression but nodded his head in nod of agreement. As we drove, I felt my heart rate rise.
The car came to a stop in front of a modest house in a neighborhood that was rather peaceful. After requesting that my driver pull over a few homes away, I promptly paid him for his services.
My position was to conceal myself behind a tree and observe Robert as he exited the vehicle. After a moment of hesitation, he knocked on the door.
As I watched intently, I refrained from breathing. After what seemed like an eternity, the door finally opened, and a person walked in.
There was no way for me to tell who it was because I was hiding behind the tree, but the sight of their silhouette caused my chest to constrict. After that, to my utter surprise, Robert entered the building.
I remained still for a little period of time. I mustered up the guts to approach the residence in a stealthy manner.
As I peered through a nearby window, my hands began to shake, and the glass began to become fogged with my breath. The things that I witnessed caused my knees to sink.
I turned around and saw Robert inside, seated next to a woman I did not recognize. He held her in the same manner that he had usually hugged me, leaning in slightly.
During the time that my heart was breaking into pieces, tears began to stream down my face and obscured my vision. It was impossible for me to comprehend what I was seeing.
It is impossible for me to say how long I remained there, shivering and quivering. When I heard the sound of the front door opening, it brought me back to the present moment.
My panic caused me to duck into the bushes and crouch down low in order to conceal myself. Observing Robert from my hiding place, I saw him come outdoors with an expression that was difficult to read. After climbing into another taxi, he departed without turning around to look back.
The moment I mustered up every ounce of bravery I possessed, I emerged from my hiding place and made my way toward the entrance. While I was raising my hand to knock, I noticed that my legs were shaking and that my chest was tight.
Following a little pause, the door was opened by the same woman that I had identified earlier. The tears that were flowing down my face caused her gaze to soften as she expressed worry for me. She stared at me with concern.
“Are you feeling okay? What can I do to assist you? She inquired in a soft and calm tone of voice.
When I finally managed to articulate my words, I swallowed hard. I uttered the words, “I am Robert’s fiancée,” although my voice was shaking. “In two days, I’m supposed to be his wife.”
The astonishment caused her eyes to widen. As she spoke, her hand moved to the doorframe, as if she was trying to balance herself. “Oh,” she muttered. “Please, come in.” While she was stepping aside, she motioned for me to come in.
She pulled out a chair for me and brought me a drink of water as she took me into the kitchen. She then led me into the dining room.
While my hands were shaking, I took a slow drink of it. As she sat down opposite me, her attitude remained one of kindness but also of caution.
“I know how this must look,” she said when there was a little pause in the conversation. “However, I assure you that it is not what you believe. This is Liz, my name. Because I am Robert’s first love.
I felt as though I had been punched in the gut by the words. My grasp on the glass became increasingly firm as I uttered, “That does not make it better.” A storm of wrath and confusion shot through my mind at that moment.
Liz heaved a sigh and leaned forward, maintaining a steady tone. If you are concerned about him cheating on you, you should know that he did not do so. When Robert was younger, he became a different person than the one you know today.
“What do you mean?” I inquired, my tone being more acerbic than I had intended.
Simple as it may sound, Liz stated, “Our relationship was not healthy.” “There were aspects of himself that he needed to work on improving. “He came here to express his regret.”
Please apologise. Why at this time? Prior to our wedding, why is it” Having my chest tense up once more, I inquired.
“Because he didn’t want to carry the weight of his mistakes into his future with you,” Liz said to him. He conveyed to me that he has a profound love for you. It was important to him to make amends with his past so that it would not have an impact on your life together.
I gave a head shake as my voice was shaking. Why did he not tell me about it? Why would you lie?
Liz smiled at me with a slight expression of understanding. There are things that everyone of us carries. Only a few of them are shared by both of us. My marriage is going well, and I have two children. Whenever Robert talked about you, it was as if you were his entire universe. You are going to provide joy to one another. You and Robert will be happy together, even though it was never intended for us to be together.
I was unclear of how I should feel, so I nodded slowly. While I was waiting for my flight, Liz offered to let me stay.
As I got to know her family, I noticed the love that she had for her husband in her eyes. Because of this, I was reminded of how I felt about Robert. I gradually started to loosen up.
Upon my arrival at my residence, the first rays of morning were just beginning to appear. A look of concern could be seen on Robert’s face as he waited by the entrance. Immediately after he caught sight of me, he encircled me in a bear embrace.
Tension could be heard in his voice as he inquired, “Katherine, where were you?” “I had a lot of concerns. I called you a great number of times, but you never picked up the phone. It seemed to me that something had taken place.
I was uncertain about how to start, so I hesitated. This is not… I finally realized that I was at a loss for words for what to say.
At the same time that his hands remained on my shoulders, Robert took a small step back. “All right, start with me. His words were, “I lied to you.” “I wasn’t on a work trip—”
My interruption was, “I know,” and I looked directly into his eyes.
A look of regret could be seen on his face as he nodded. “I am sorry that I would lie. Despite the fact that I should have told you, I swore that I didn’t do anything wrong.
“I know,” I whispered to myself. “And I’m sorry too.”
Richard wore a frown. “Why are you apologizing?”
While my voice was shaking, I continued, “Because I had my doubts about you.” Following Travis’s phone call, in which he informed me that you were not with him, I followed you. I traveled to Liz’s residence. We had a conversation. She went over everything in detail.
The expression on Robert’s face changed. “Katherine, I love you,” he told her. You are the only one. It is my hope that we will be together for the rest of our lives.
The weight that was in my chest began to lift. It is true. As I leaned in closer to kiss him, I replied, “Now I am without a doubt about it.”
