She may be familiar to you as the frightful, tough Sgt. Callahan from Police Academy and the terrifying antagonist from Rob Zombie’s horror films.
However, Leslie Easterbrook’s path is a masterwork in reinvention and goes beyond only iconic roles.
She broke stereotypes and reinvented what it meant to be a tough woman on television, going from small-town Nebraska to Hollywood stardom. But now, where is she?
Leslie Easterbrook was adopted when she was a baby, and her career is proof of her adaptability, tenacity, and unmistakable on-screen persona.
Although she is most known for playing the tough and witty Sgt. Debbie Callahan from Police Academy, her career in Hollywood goes much beyond that well-known part.
Leslie’s Midwest upbringing—she was adopted at the age of nine months after being born in Nebraska—shaped her realistic and grounded perspective on life. Her passion of education and music was fostered by her adoptive mother, an English teacher, and her adoptive father, a music professor. Leslie was surrounded by music all the time because she was the only kid of singing parents.
Sharing our passion for music with Leslie came naturally to us. Her mother told the Omaha World-Herald in 1977, “We thought she had a sweet voice, and of course we encouraged her to join vocal groups, but it wasn’t until she went to college that we discovered what a remarkable voice she really has.”
Leslie Easterbrook wanted to be an opera singer, but he appeared headed for a traditional life after graduating from Kearney High School and then going on to Stephens College. Hollywood, however, had different ideas.
Her big break came in 1980 when she was cast as Rhonda Lee in the ABC popular series Laverne & Shirley. Her character, a glitzy, witty neighbor, immediately stood out in the later seasons as the show moved from Milwaukee to California.
Being able to portray the role of Rhonda in the show at last was truly an incredible experience. There was a SAG strike right after I received the part. After the strike ended, I received a call informing me that I had to re-audition for the role I believed I had already been given. Leslie once recalled, “I didn’t get the part and could begin working until six auditions later.”
But what really made her famous was her performance as Sgt. Callahan in Police Academy. Easterbrook accepted the assignment despite his initial reluctance to portray such a strong, sexually assured guy. It is impossible to forget the stern and no-nonsense instructor at the police school, Callahan, who became a cult favorite due to her dominating presence, keen comedic timing, and fearless enthusiasm.
The irony is that I’m not at all like that. Never had I been difficult. I have played a variety of characters, but I had never portrayed an intimidating or sexually aggressive person. I never played the female who got the guy because I was too big. How could I accomplish it, I wondered? However, I did. When I frightened the director and producer during the audition, they retreated in their seats, and I thought, “Oh no, I really blew it now.” I frightened them. I was upset as I left the audition. Until I received the part, I was unable to read the script. Leslie once remarked, “I thought it was outrageous and so funny.”
How she got ready for her role as Sgt. Callahan
Despite her passion for delicious food, Leslie was always committed to maintaining her physical fitness during her years as a Hollywood actor. She was an enthusiastic athlete who excelled as an equestrian, played volleyball, and continued to have a deep love for running. She kept herself in top shape by running roughly 10 miles twice a week. She also regularly worked out at the gym and attended dance classes.
She went above and beyond in her preparation to get ready for her roles in Police Academy, attending rigorous karate and martial arts sessions to give Sgt. Callahan’s bold demeanor strength and authenticity. Did you also know that Clint Eastwood’s well-known Dirty Harry persona is allegedly referenced in Leslie Easterbrook’s character name, “Callahan”?
However, Police Academy was only one phase of her long career. She had nearly 300 appearances on television, including The Dukes of Hazzard, Baywatch, Matlock, Murder, and She Wrote.

Before focusing on horror in the 2000s and starring in films like The Devil’s Rejects, she even dabbled in flicks like Private Resort.
Although I find the horror genre fascinating in many ways, I’m constantly in awe of how stressful the entertainment is. Even though a lot of it is gritty and grueling, the fans are the happiest and most delightful individuals I’ve ever met. I get to know their parents and kids. They are decent, law-abiding, everyday, and amiable individuals. My favorite notion is that they are the healthiest people in the area and have discovered a place to get rid of their problems,” Leslie added.
One name that comes to mind when discussing Private Resort (1985) is Johnny Depp. The movie is primarily remembered for being Depp and Rob Morrow’s debut lead roles in a motion picture. Private Resort, a legendary teen sex comedy from the 1980s, makes extensive use of exposed skin, bikinis, and extravagant antics to promote itself.
However, Leslie Easterbrook is another name that frequently comes up for people who have actually seen the film.
Easterbrook portrays Bobbie Sue, a sly and shrewd woman who becomes entangled in Jack’s (Depp) and Ben’s (Morrow) crazy weekend activities at an opulent beachside resort. One of the main subplots of the movie revolves around her character, who uses her charm and slyness to spin a web of humor and mayhem.

Easterbrook’s ability to combine sensual beauty with flawless comedic timing is what sets her performance apart.
She gives Bobbie Sue a lively, naughty vibe that enhances the humor in the movie and demonstrates her talent for portraying powerful, erratic, and amusing women. Private Resort delivers just what viewers anticipated from ’80s comedies: troublemaking, ridiculous scenarios, and just the perfect amount of mischief. However, it never became a cinematic classic or a highlight of Johnny Depp’s career.
The Super Bowl was chaotic.
Easterbrook has her own limits behind the scenes. A provision in her contract said that she would only reveal her ass in the movie. Producers apparently persuaded her to don a sheer negligee, though, which left little room for interpretation in intense lighting.
What about Morrow and Depp? They allegedly agreed to find and destroy every copy of Private Resort because they were so humiliated by it. It is safe to conclude that they were unsuccessful because the movie is still regarded as a classic decades later, with Leslie Easterbrook’s iconic performance serving as one of its most talked-about highlights.
Easterbrook’s skills went beyond acting to include music. She performed the Star Spangled Banner during a number of Los Angeles Dodgers games against the California Angels in the early 1980s. She had a large, powerful voice.
Her performance of the national anthem during Super Bowl XVII in 1983 was arguably her proudest moment. However, there were many accidents and near misses on her path to playing the song at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl venue.
Her singing at Angel’s games for free tickets was the beginning of it all, and the head of entertainment for the Los Angeles Rams saw her skill. As word got out, she was quickly being considered for the Super Bowl position.
For her, however, things never seemed to go as planned. She sent NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle a tape because she was unable to attend the game where he was scheduled to hear her sing due to a fender bender. She eventually got the job, but the trouble didn’t stop there.
She had to race across the Rose Bowl parking lot in high heels while carrying her dress when her limo driver got lost and security refused to let her in. After arriving, she hardly had time to catch her breath before starting to perform.
Even though some players gave her back pats as though she were one of them, everything went flawlessly after she joked with the honor guard before starting to sing. In the end, everything came together, but it was a crazy, unforgettable experience filled with lost moments.
Mishap on the Police Academy set
Off-screen, Leslie has produced beginner-friendly instructional films and been an outspoken supporter of gun safety and education.
After an accident during a Police Academy video production in the early 1990s, she made the decision to learn how to use a shotgun.
To announce the start of a foot race, she had been requested to shoot a starter pistol. The camera operator told her to hold the weapon near her face for the best shot. She shot the gun without realizing she needed ear protection, and the sharp blast broke her eardrum.
She learned from the experience that she needed to be completely proficient with firearms if she ever wanted to handle one in a film again. She contacted an experienced shooter friend, Lee Purcell, who assisted her in getting started.
She dedicated herself to learning how to shoot a shotgun despite visual problems. She persevered despite the challenging, costly, and time-consuming nature of the training. She took first place in D Class at the California State Trap Shoot two years later. The triumph was noteworthy because she had outperformed 400 men who had been shooting their entire lives, despite the fact that it was the lowest class.

Her commitment to philanthropy, especially aiding law enforcement agencies and children’s charities, demonstrated her support for causes outside of Hollywood.
The husband of Leslie Easterbrook
One of the most significant aspects of her life was her marriage to screenwriter Dan Wilcox, which lasted until his death in 2024.
