Following Donald Trump’s announcement of controversial new tariffs, a Canadian premier has declared that he will cut off power to 1.5 million US customers.
President Trump signed an order imposing “catastrophic” tariffs to “hold China, Mexico, and Canada accountable for their promises to halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US” shortly after his return to the White House in January. The order imposed 10 percent tariffs on Chinese goods and 25 percent on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.
According to the 47th President of the United States, Canada’s only “solution” to evade the levy is to join the US as its “cherished 51st State.”
“Today, following a 30-day pause, the U.S. administration has decided to proceed with imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports and 10 percent tariffs on Canadian energy,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a statement issued on Monday, March 3. I want to make it clear that there is no excuse for these acts.
Trump is “taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country,” according to a White House proclamation announcing the tariffs.
According to the order: “Fentanyl production in Canada is increasing, and last fiscal year, enough fentanyl was intercepted at the northern border to kill 9.8 million Americans.”
“Additionally, illegal border crossings from Canada reached historic new highs every year for the last four fiscal years.”
“I will do anything, including cutting off their energy — with a smile on my face,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who secured a third majority last week, stated during a press conference.
“They must experience the agony. Do they intend to attack us with force? We must return with twice as much vigor.
Ford told NBC: “In addition to [maintaining] production in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, we [Ontario] keep the lights on in 1.5 million homes.
“If he wants to destroy our economy and our families, I will shut down the electricity going into the US.”
Additionally, Ford reiterated his original claims on Monday when addressing at a mining convention in downtown Toronto.
“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford reportedly stated, according to the Toronto Sun.
They must experience the anguish because they depend on our energy. They want to attack us fiercely, but we’ll fight back twice as fiercely.”
“That’s precisely what we’re going to do,” he continued.
“The provinces have a big say in it, but it’s the federal government that’s leading the charge, and we’re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder no matter who’s in the federal government.”
