A California driver just obtained a unique license plate that displays an illegal statement when viewed in a mirror.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) states that customized license plates are subject to stringent regulations, which forbid anything that is considered vulgar, slang in any language, or similar to pre-existing plates. But according to Boing Boing, the driver of this specific truck seems to have disregarded these rules.
Depending on the kind of plate, California allows drivers to add a combination of letters, numbers, and characters on their license plates. The characters can range from two to seven.
California DMV supports numerous state efforts and programs by offering historical, military, and special interest plates in addition to personalized plates. Agriculture, the arts, firefighters, pets, coastal preservation, children’s health and safety, conservation, recreation, and more are all represented on these plates.
People can show their pride in the country’s military by purchasing military-themed plates such the Congressional Medal of Honor, Gold Star Family, Legion of Valor, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Ex-Prisoner of War, Purple Heart, and Veterans’ Organization plates.
Additionally, cars of historical significance that were manufactured after 1922 and reached a minimum age of 24 are eligible for vintage license plates.
Time magazine claims that after laws required car owners to register with the state, New York issued the first license plate in 1901. The owner’s initials had to be clearly visible on these early plates.
