A bill filed by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) would make June 14, the birthday of Republican President Donald J. Trump, which falls on Flag Day, a government holiday.
On the official US Congress website, the measure is identified as H.R. 1395.
The “Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act,” if it is approved, would formally declare June 14 a federal holiday in honor of Flag Day and President Donald J. Trump’s birthday.
Flag Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the Stars and Stripes’ official adoption as the United States flag on June 14, 1777, falls on the same day as the President’s Day, June 14. The bill would establish “Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day” on June 14 as a new government holiday that would be officially recognized for all time.
“No modern president has been more pivotal for our country than Donald J. Trump,” she stated in a news release introducing the bill. He is the most significant president in contemporary American history, serving as both our 45th and 47th president and guiding our nation during a period of intense internal and foreign unrest.
She went on to explain that Trump has been instrumental in changing the course of American history and should be seen as the “founder of America’s Golden Age” because of his participation in negotiating the Abraham Accords and his support of “the largest tax relief package in American history.”
She continues by comparing Trump to George Washington, the first president of the United States and one of the founding fathers, saying, “This bill will add Trump’s birthday to this list, just as George Washington’s birthday is codified as a federal holiday.”
The only US president to have his birthday observed as a federal holiday—often known as Presidents Day—is George Washington.
She mentioned the need to establish a new official holiday celebrating the American flag and everything it stands for, citing the approaching 250th anniversary of the US and the absence of one.
Tenney stated, “We can guarantee that President Trump’s contributions to American greatness and the significance of the American Flag are permanently enshrined in law by designating Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day as a federal holiday.”
The only state that now acknowledges Flag Day as a legitimate holiday is Pennsylvania.
Since 2018, Tenney has been one of Trump’s closest allies, and Trump ran for Tenney’s reelection in 2018.
She adopts Trump’s stance on key talking points, including immigration and employment. Regarding the tariff issue, meanwhile, she allegedly acknowledged having “mixed emotions” about Trump’s proposal in 2018 when he imposed heavy tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, noting that she identifies as a free-trade Republican.
She did not, however, vocally oppose the tariff plan or sign a petition organized by Republicans pushing Trump to drop the notion.
