The 50th anniversary special of the show included Hanks’ SNL routine.
When Tom Hanks’ MAGA-wearing ‘Doug’ character appeared on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, it infuriated Donald Trump supporters.
Celebrities from all over the world gathered in New York on Sunday, February 16, to commemorate Saturday Night Live’s significant birthday.
Meryl Streep, Martin Short, Jack Nicholson, and Aubrey Plaza were among the many celebrities who attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the sketch comedy.
Hanks attended the event as well, and the actor made an appearance in a comedy that has generated some controversy among Trump supporters.
Wearing a red ‘Make America Great Again’ cap, the Forrest Gump actor portrayed a man named Doug on the parody game show Black Jeopardy.
The spoof show’s host, Kenan Thompson, attempted to shake Doug’s hand during the skit, but at first he declined.
After making the welcoming motion, Doug said, “I don’t like that, whoa, whoa, whoa. Perhaps I’ll develop a show called White Jeopardy for you to participate in.”
After the sketch aired, a large number of Trump supporters took to Twitter, and it’s safe to say that the great majority were not impressed.
According to one post, Tom Hanks made fun of millions of Trump fans on Saturday Night Live by dressing like a slob and calling them rednecks, racists, and stupid.
“Libs, keep it up. You won’t ever be elected again.”
“Tom Hanks just came out on SNL in a MAGA hat where he acted like he didn’t want to shake a black man’s hand,” wrote Link Lauren, a former aide to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“This program questions why its ratings are so low. The popular vote went to Trump. It’s awful to use the cliche that MAGA is racist. For snooty liberal elites, Saturday Night Live is an unfunny show. Many former Democrats have come together to form the present Republican Party, which is a broad coalition. “Goodbye, SNL!”
“No one in the audience laughs as Tom Hanks appears on SNL as a racist Trump supporter that refuses to shake hands with a black man,” wrote a third Trump supporter, and another wrote: “This enrages me.” In tonight’s SNL spoof, Tom Hanks plays a bigoted racist who visibly flinches as a black game show host extends his hand to shake hands.
